An insight into a stadium's energy use through data visualization

Artifact

As the AEC industry works towards goals of net-zero projects and sustainability to ensure the longevity of projects, it becomes important for buildings to track operational energy use. On one such project, the client wanted to track operational energy use for a stadium in relation to occupancy numbers and events.

Along with the sustainability team, Ankur Moolky compiled data into a comprehensive set, and then used Grasshopper to produce visualizations of the data to discover insights about energy use intensity at the stadium. From the visualization, it was evident that the stadium had a significantly higher base operational energy use than was necessary, even on days when only the stadium staff were present and no events were occurring.

This ultimately helped the client understand where energy could be saved, highlighting the potential to save millions of dollars and reduce unnecessary energy expenditure.
