A team of seven architecture students from Syracuse University was awarded First Prize in the ACADIA Computational Design Award in the Student Design Competition. Students Ivan Shen (not pictured), Yue Zhuo, Gaem Saensopa, Ankur Moolky, Aung Htet Khant Paing, Tianchi Zhao, and Danny Nguyen proposed their project, "Promenade for Prosperity", a restorative justice design for Baltimore's I-40 "Highway to Nowhere".
Their proposal honed in on the current and past traditions of the neighborhood's predominantly African American population to create a flexible ecosystem for community engagement. It sought to build an infrastructure that allowed the community to take back the space they had lost to racially discriminatory policy.
The team was also recognized as a finalist in the Overall Design Award across an entry pool of over 40 teams.
